Be smart in the sun with sunscreen

Is sunscreen the ultimate beauty product? but what’s your sunscreen made of?

Everyone knows that sunscreen is the key to young, healthy skin. But what if you’re still trying to get your fill of vitamin D? There’s no need to be scared of the sun—

|You just need to be smart about it.

The sun, in doses, is good for us. It makes us feel happy and relaxed, it helps us to get outside more, is a natural source of vitamin D which we need to stay healthy, and encourages a healthy dose of serotonin (the chemical responsible for happiness).

So what does this mean for you?

|You can still enjoy the sun without having to worry about wrinkles or skin damage.

So how can you get the benefits of getting a healthy dose of vitamin D without doing any damage to your skin? The answer is simple:

|Be smart about being outside. Wear sunscreen, but don’t avoid the sun altogether!

|The good news is that there’s plenty of room for both sunscreen and vitamin D in your life. Just 15 minutes in the sun can give us enough vitamin D for the day.

What is the UV index?

The UV ruler numbers range from 1 to 11+ and are rated in range from low, moderate, high, very high, and extreme. In order to tan safely, the sun is safest in low to moderate conditions. The higher your UV index is, the faster your skin can burn, so make smart decisions about how long you choose to play in the sun and minimize damage to your skin.

What is SPF?

SPF stands for sun protection factor and it’s a way of measuring how well your sunscreen protects you from the sun. The higher the number on the label, the longer you can stay in the sun without burning. When choosing an SPF rating, make sure that your sunscreen has an SPF rating of at least 30 because anything lower won’t provide adequate protection against UV rays.

| The key to maintaining a healthy balance between your need for vitamin D and protecting your skin from damage is choosing where you go and what you do outside, keeping an eye on the UV index.

It’s all about the ingredients, not just the sunscreen.

If you are concerned about what you put on your skin or if you want to try something safer and natural that also works,

| Non-nano zinc oxide is the safest active sunblock ingredient for commercial production.

Did you know there are two kinds of ultraviolet radiation (UVA and UVB) and only one kind of sunscreen ingredient (zinc oxide) that protects against both types? As well as being a natural option, mineral-based sunscreens that contain non-nano zinc oxide protect against both UVA and UVB rays by reflecting them away from your skin rather than absorbing them like chemical sunscreens do.

What does nano mean?

|Nano means “smaller than 100 nanometers.”

Our non-nano zinc oxide has been tested to be far more than 100 nanometers, meaning it is absorbed far less by the pores. PURU non-nano zinc oxide is made by milling it down in to a fine powder before adding into a luxurious formulation completely made of natural ingredients, including organic coconut oil, to soothe your skin while providing superior protection.

|If you do choose to use sunscreen, be sure that you’re putting on a truly natural, safe, and effective product.

Zinc is a reef safe mineral

|Mineral-based sunscreens are reef safe and more gentle on sensitive skin.

Ingredient sourcing in the beauty industry matters and our coral reefs are in direct danger from ingredients like avobenzone, oxybenzone, octocrylene, homosalate, octisalate, and octinoxate, none of which are or ever will be contained in PURU products. In 2018, the entire state of Hawaii banned sunscreens that contained the chemicals octinoxate and oxybenzone, after research discovered damage to the Hawaian coral reefs and local marine life. Be wary of labels, and because of the way cosmetic labelling works, octinoxate and oxybenzone can sometimes appear under different names on some ingredients lists.

Our PURU Zinc Oxide Sunscreen protects against both kinds of UV rays with its non-nano formula made from naturally occurring zincite. This is why we have chosen to use this as our active ingredient in all PURU products. You can rest easy knowing that your skin will be protected from harmful effects while still looking great this summer!
